Patient Rights & Responsibilities

As a patient at LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital we want you to communicate openly with your health care team, be well informed, participate in treatment choice decisions, and be actively involved in your care. As a partner in your own care, we want you and your family to know your rights as well as your responsibilities.

LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital is committed to play a major role in the planning and delivery of safe and effective patient care.

You have the right to:
  • Receive considerate, respectful, compassionate and non-discriminating care regardless of age, gender, race, national origin, religion, political views, and type of insurance, sexual orientation or disabilities. 
  • Receive care in a safe environment free from all forms of abuse, neglect or harassment. 
  • Be informed by your doctor about your diagnosis and possible prognosis, the benefits and risks/complications of treatment, and the expected outcome and/or alternative of treatment.
  • Be informed and sign a written consent for any non-emergency procedure.
  • Know the names of physicians, nurses and other health care team involved in your care.
  • Inquire about the experience and skills of the physicians, nurses and other health care team.
  • Request medical information from the medical record when authorized by you.
  • Obtain information about your health condition and treatment options from the treating physician.
  • Be treated with dignity.
  • Keep information in your medical record confidential.
  • Have privacy during examination, procedures, clinical care/ treatment.
  • Reject medical treatment unless required by law.
  • Discontinue medical treatment.
  • Request pastoral services or similar requests related to your spiritual and religious beliefs.
  • Have your end of life wishes respected and carried out as long as it is compatible with national laws and institutional rules and regulations.
  • Have visitors during scheduled visiting hours.
  • Examine and receive an explanation of the hospital bills.
  • Have an interpreter when needed.
  • Your pain will be addressed, assessed and managed.
  • Change your physician.
  • File complaints.
  • Refuse involvement of family members in care decisions.
  • Secure your belongings and possessions.
  • Request a second opinion.
  • Request a transfer to another healthcare facility when medically safe to transfer.

  • Receive emergency medical care and treatment easily and quickly.
  • Expect emergency treatment to be delivered upon arrival to the Emergency Room.
  • Refer to a specialist/consultant for special care when there is a clinical need.
  • Receive detailed explanation, during your hospital stay, of your condition and outcomes of your care, treatment, aftercare including unanticipated outcomes by your treating physician.
  • Discuss and request information related to your specific drug therapy, possible adverse side effects and drug interactions.
  • Monitor your compliance and proper drug use, institute interventions when necessary.
  • Have drug therapy monitored for safety and efficacy and to make reasonable efforts to detect and prevent drug allergies, adverse reactions or contraindications.
  • Provide appropriate security for children, disabled, elderly or vulnerable patients.
  • Visual and clear signage to enable you and your family to find the way in and out of the hospital and clinics.
  • Expect to have a full medical and nursing assessment of your individual clinical needs upon admission.
  • Keep your family informed of your progress upon your approval.
  • Be informed about the date of your discharge in advance and be given details of all aftercare instructions.

 

 

It is your responsibility to:
  • Inform the hospital as soon as possible if you feel your rights have been violated or your safety is a concern.
  • Protect and safeguard your property in your possession and control.
  • Provide full and accurate information about your past and present health history to the health care providers.
  • Comply with all requested measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases within the hospital.
  • Respect the obligation that hospital staff must provide medical treatment to other patients.
  • Provide accurate information necessary for healthcare providers, insurance processing, inpatient admissions, and outpatient registration.
  • Ask any questions you may have concerning your hospital bills.
  • Pay your hospital bills promptly.
  • Bring your medical card/ insurance card and proper identification with you every time you present to UMCRH.
  • Follow the rules and regulations of LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital.
  • Show respect and to be courteous to the staff.
  • Restraint from using abusive language and/or display of unethical behavior to other patients, visitors or staff.
  • Accept consequences of not complying with medical treatment /instructions.
  • Inform the clinic secretary if you are unable to come to your follow up appointment.
  • Inform the nurse in charge if you have any special requirements for discharge such as transportation need.
